New Pathways To Canadian Permanent Residency

by | May 9, 2021

There are three new Canadian permanent residency pathways that have recently been announced by the Government of Canada. The three new pathways were announced on 14 April 2021. The new permanent residency pathways are targeted at temporary residents who are already inside Canada and wish to apply for permanent residency.

It is important to note that the recently announced pathways are separate from the Express Entry streams such as the Canadian Experience Class program which would typically allow individuals already in Canada to apply for permanent residency.

 Why New Permanent Residency Pathways?

The Government of Canada recognizes that there are some temporary residents in Canada such as those on work permits or those who may have graduated from post-secondary education in Canada who might not ordinarily be able to apply for permanent residency under the regular Express Entry Program for whatever reasons. Hence, the announcement of the three new pathway options to Canadian permanent residency for such individuals.

The announcement stipulates that the Government of Canada will be opening up three new pathways towards permanent residency aimed at creating permanent residency for over 90,000 new permanent residents. Essentially, there is now an opportunity for 90,000 persons currently in Canada either working in Canada on work permits or international graduates to obtain Canadian permanent residency.

HealthCare Workers And Other Essential Occupations

The focus of two of the three new pathways is on temporary workers in essential job types already in Canada. To be eligible, workers must have at least one year of Canadian work experience in a healthcare profession or another pre-approved essential occupation. Notably, the Government of Canada is targeting to approve at most 20,000 applications under this pathway.

There is a quota, that is, a maximum number of applications that the Government is willing to process this year. The total number of essential healthcare workers who are currently in Canada as temporary workers are 20,000. There are also another 30,000 applications allowed for persons in other essential occupations other than healthcare occupations.

International Graduates

The third stream is a 40,000 applications pathway for international students who have graduated from a Canadian post-secondary institution. The pathway specifically targets international graduates who are currently in Canada and who perhaps would not ordinarily qualify under the regular Canadian Experience Class within the regular Express Entry program.

The third pathway allows international graduates to apply for Canadian permanent residency. There is an allowance for persons who are French bilingual in Canada, whether they are in Quebec or outside of Canada to apply for permanent residency under the new pathways that have been recently announced.

Conclusion

The announcement on the three new pathways to Canadian permanent residency is informed by the Canadian Government’s acknowledgment that immigration remains critical to Canada’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic and will help Canada address its labour shortages in the workforce.

Therefore, the announcement is great news for eligible persons who are already in Canada. The three new pathways are an opportunity worth exploring especially if you are struggling to qualify for Canadian permanent residency under the Canadian Experience Class.
