Persons who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents typically require a visitor visa to enter Canada. This is also known a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV).
However, the nationals of some countries do not require visas in order to enter Canada. These are referred to as visa exempt countries. Nationals from visa exempt countries will need to apply online for electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) should they plan to travel to Canada by air.
If you are from a country whose nationals do require visitor visas (visa required) to enter Canada, you will need to apply whether you are coming as a student, temporary worker, or as a visitor.
Types of visitor visas
You can either be issued a single entry visa and multiple entry visa. A single entry visa will allow a one-time entry into Canada. A multiple entry visa can be issued for a duration of up to 10 years. They will allow you to visit Canada multiple times for as long as the visa remains valid. You will typically be allowed to remain in Canada for no more than six months at a time.
The immigration officer approving your visa application will determine whether you’ll be issued a multiple entry or single entry visa and the duration of the visa.
If you have already been approved for Canadian study or work permit, then your visa will be issued automatically – provided you’re applying from a visa required country.
