Canada’s Express Entry Program

by | Jan 6, 2021

Canada’s permanent residency application process involves a system known as the Express Entry System. This system is used as a means to sift out applicants, that is, people who are applying for permanent residency, under one of the economic programs.

If you want to apply to become a Canadian permanent resident under a program known as the Federal Skilled Worker Program or another program known as the Federal Skilled Trades Program, or if you’re here in Canada and you want to apply under the Canadian Experience Class program, the government assesses these programs through a system known as the Express Entry System.

Factors Considered Under The Express Entry Program

The Express Entry System allows the government to rank applicants based on certain factors. It ranks applicants based on their education level, their number of years of experience and their age. It also ranks applicants based on their ability to speak, write, read and listen to either the English or French language.

These four factors are taken into consideration by the Express Entry System and the persons who meet the basic eligibility requirements are added into a pool of eligible applicants.

The Permanent Residency Application Process

It is important to note that getting into the Express Entry pool is a good thing, however, it does not mean that you are guaranteed being invited to apply for Canadian permanent residency. In fact, the permanent residency application process has two tiers.

Eligibility

The first tier is the Express Entry process, which allows you to get into the pool of eligible applicants. After getting into the pool of eligible applicants, you then have to score relatively highly in order to receive an invitation to apply. The invitation to apply allows the government to pull your name out of the pool of applicants and invite you to apply to become a Canadian permanent resident.

Additionally, getting into the Express Entry pool does not assure you of Canadian permanent residency. All it does is that it puts you into the pool of eligible applicants, which means that you would have met the basic eligibility requirements. However, that in itself would not be sufficient. You would need to score at a rate that is high enough and competitive enough to allow for the Government of Canada to pull your name from that pool when they conduct their regular Express Entry draws.

Required Score For The Application

The required score can vary from time to time. Generally speaking, in order to get selected from the pool of eligible applicants, you would need to be scoring around 470 points in order to receive an invitation to apply. It is only after receiving this invitation to apply that you can actually then proceed to apply for permanent residency.

You must then provide all of the supporting documentation that is required. You will need to instruct your lawyer to prepare a submission letter to explain any deficiencies or any issues to ensure that everything is in order. Bear in mind that all this happens after you have received an invitation to apply and not at the point when you are applying to be selected into the Express Entry pool.
