The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is a mandatory language test that must be completed by persons who want to come to Canada as permanent residents. This test however is not mandatory in other temporary residency cases.
Is The IELTS Language Test Always Mandatory?
Must a person who wishes to come to Canada as a visitor or permanent resident first complete an English language test or a French language test? This is one of the questions often asked by clients concerning the Canadian immigration process.
You do not always have to complete an English language test or a French language test in order for you to come to Canada. It depends on how you want to come to Canada. However, if you intend to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident, you will have to complete the English language test at some point.
Available Language Tests In Canada
Canada generally has two tests that it allows persons who want to immigrate to Canada to write. You can either write the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), or the Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program (CELPIP), which is the other option for English speakers. There is also a separate test that French speakers may write. Ultimately, if you want to come to Canada as a permanent resident, then you will have to write a language test.
Required Scores For The Language Test
The score that you need to get will vary depending on the category you are applying under. For instance, if you’re applying under the Federal Skilled Worker Program, then you’re going to have to score seven or above using the Canadian language benchmark. If you’re applying under the Federal Skilled Trades Program, then the minimum required score is going to be lower.
Exceptions To The Language Test Requirement
However, there are some exceptions. For example, if you want to come to Canada as a student, you’re not required to write an English language test. Similarly, if you want to come to Canada as a worker on a work permit, there’s no requirement for you to write an English language test or any language test. Also, if you are being sponsored by a Canadian permanent resident or a Canadian citizen to come to Canada, there’s no requirement for you to write the English language test.
When You Have To Do The IELTS
Therefore, if you intend to come to Canada as a permanent resident, then you will have to write the English language or French language test. However, if you’re coming as a temporary resident, or if you’re being sponsored by a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, there’s no requirement for you to complete either of the language tests.
