Requirements For A Canadian Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

by | Nov 17, 2020

If you are contemplating or intending to apply for a Canadian temporary resident visa, there are six requirements that you will need to meet.

1. Status Document

The first requirement is that you will need to have a passport or a status document from your home country that you will have to share with the Canadian immigration authorities. This is important because your Canadian visa will be stamped into this document.

2. Good Medical Health

The second requirement is that you will need to be in good health. Generally speaking, if you want to come to Canada for a period of less than six months you are not required to get your medical exams done. This is because medical exams are not normally required if you are applying for a visa to come to Canada for less than six months. However, you need to be in good medical health in order for you to qualify for a visa.

3. Criminal Inadmissibility

The third requirement is that there must not be any kind of criminal inadmissibility issue. Criminal inadmissibility involves circumstances where there has been a criminal issue in the past that would otherwise prevent you from entering Canada. If such circumstances exist, it would be deemed as a criminal inadmissibility and that could potentially prevent you from successfully applying for a visa.

4. Intention To Return To Your Home Country

The fourth requirement is that you need to show that you have sufficient ties to your home country. Ties in the sense that you must be able to convince the Canadian immigration officer that you have the intention and reasons to return to your home country once your visit in Canada ends.

These reasons can be in the form of property that you may own in your country and that you would need to return to. You may have a job that you will need to return to or you may have very strong family ties that are an important reason for your wanting to return to your home country. Ultimately, you must be able to convince the officer that you have sufficient ties in your home country to warrant you returning home.

5. Sufficient Funds

The fifth requirement that you need to meet is that you must be able to convince the Canadian immigration authorities that you have sufficient funds to sustain yourself while you are in Canada. The officer will need to know that you will not be a burden on the Canadian system while you are in Canada. Therefore, you will need to show that you have enough money to take care of yourself.

For instance, you will need to show that you can afford to pay for a hotel room if you will be staying in a hotel. If you will be staying with a family member or a friend, you will need to convince the officers that these family members or friends will be able to take care of you while you are in Canada. Normally, one of the ways this can be done is by having your family member or friend in Canada provide you with a letter of invitation.

Letter of Invitation- This letter essentially guarantees that the family member or friend will undertake responsibility to cover your financial and other needs during the period of time that you will be in Canada.

6. Ability To Return To Your Home Country

The sixth requirement is that you will need to show that you will be able to return to your home country, if and when it becomes necessary. So, you may need to show this by providing an airline ticket for your return flight or by showing that you have sufficient funds to pay for your airfare back to your home country.
